Originally built in 1923 as the Lübeck and renamed in 1940, Frankenstein was a 3703t German cargo vessel built in 1923. She measured 103x14x8 metres, and was fitted with triple expansion engines. There are varying accounts of her fate. One source says she was torpedoed by a British submarine in April 1941 then bombed and sunk by aircraft. Another source says she stranded on rocks near Florø in June 1940 and finally slipped off a month later.

She is believed to lie in diveable depths, but it is not certain whether the wreck (or her remains - she may have been salvaged) has been located yet.
